Following the Campaign of Hate 2024©, the sitting POTUS signed not one, but two Executive Orders within his first 48 hours in office, amplifying his[1] disdain for Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (and Accessibility) programs. By signing EOs 14151 and 14173, the President made it clear that in his eyes, DEI is, in fact, an enemy of America.
Following the collision of an American Eagle flight and a US Army H-60 Blackhawk less than ten days after his inauguration, POTUS implied—without actually coming right out and saying it—that diversity in hiring within the Federal Aviation Administration “could have been” a cause of the crash.
“On my second day in office, I ordered an immediate return to merit-based recruitment, hiring, and promotion, elevating safety and ability as the paramount standard. Yesterday’s devastating accident tragically underscores the need to elevate safety and competence as the priority of the FAA.”
The order he referred to was Executive Order 14173, signed on January 21, which directed all federal departments not to issue contracts to private organizations that enforce diversity, equity, inclusion and accessibility (DEIA) frameworks. A day prior, on his first day in office, he signed EO 14151, directing the Office of Management and Budget (OMB) to terminate all mandates, policies, programs, preferences, and activities relating to “diversity, equity, inclusion, and accessibility.”[2]
This administration’s opposition to DEI(A) was so great that one Executive Order wasn’t sufficient. They needed two EO’s to essentially ban it from the Federal government and those who do business with the Feds.
(The question of “why” this administration is so opposed to diversity, equity, and inclusion—and let’s not forget accessibility—is another discussion for another time. But we all know why.)
If this administration is so opposed to diversity, equity, and inclusion (and their cousin, accessibility), what would they prefer in its place?
If they despise DEI two executive orders-worth, the supposition would be that they prefer the opposite of DEI.
The opposite of Diversity is Homogeneity, something consisting of parts or people that are similar to each other. See also: Sameness
The opposite of Equity is pretty simple: Inequity. See also: Unfairness
Likewise, the opposite of Inclusion is Exclusion.
And, lest we forget, the opposite of Accessibility is Inaccessibility, or making something unattainable or unavailable.
Ergo, we can assume that the hiring practices within the Federal government—and at those companies that do business with it—will focus on making sure all the employees are the same, that hiring should be unfair and exclude groups of people, and that these positions are unattainable or unavailable.
Ladies and Gentlemen, welcome to the current administration’s 1960 HIEI culture.
[1] By “his,” I of course mean the Christian Nationalist-based Project 2025 team. And racists.
[2] Apparently accessibility programs also irritate him/the white nationalists.
